With its rich pot of melting culture heritage and racial harmonious society, Singapore is one of the best places to experience different cultural festivals all around the year. It is also one of the safest cities in the world where you can be out at two in the morning with nothing to worry about!
An upcoming celebration you won’t want to miss is Deepavali. This year, Deepavali falls on 30th October 2016. Hindus all around the world will be celebrating this sacred occasion where light triumphs over darkness and good triumphs over evil.
Be prepared to experience the sights and sounds unique only to Singapore during this season! Little India is the place you have to visit to enjoy this festivity! Colourful arches and stunning bright lights await to surround you the moment you step into Serangoon Road. We don’t recommend that you drive here as it gets really crowded especially during this festive period. Don’t worry too much as getting here is a breeze with the North East MRT Line allowing you to alight at Little India Station.
Hop on down to soak in the yearly bazaar experience where you will set your sense of sight with ornamental decoration items, tickle your taste buds with traditional cookies and learn the traditional Indian culture. You’ll see items such as rangoli, sparklers, lamps and flowers being sold at the bazaar!
Ladies, get yourself a pair of colourful saree to wear on this special day to immerse yourself with the celebration, or better yet get an Anarkali (long flowy dress) to get some Bollywood feels! You’ll be amazed at the beautiful intricate designs on the traditional costumes. Men, get yourself a Kurta to look just like the dashing Shah Rukh Khan! Who knows, you might even score yourself a gorgeous Indian girl with that on!
One of the most iconic shopping landmarks in Little India you have to visit would be Mustafa Centre. Located on Syed Alwi Road, it is open 24 hours and you’ll be able to find all kinds of things under one roof, ranging from groceries to jewellery and even electronic goods! After a good day of shopping, head on down to The Banana Leaf Apollo where you’ll be able to savour the delicious Indian dishes such as Chicken Masala, Fish Head Curry and much more! To whet your appetite further, ask for your rice to be served on a Banana leaf. The aroma will set your tongue asking for more.
Unique to Singapore, you can find a variation of the traditional Prata cooked in so many creative mouth-watering ways you can think of! Cheese Prata, Prata Bom, Egg Prata, just to name a few. Dip it in the curry and taste the magic in your mouth! Ask around and a local will gladly point you to a few known places you can go too!
Do visit the Sri Mariamman Temple while you are in Singapore as it is also the place where the Singapore Fire walking festival will take place on the 23rd October 2016. You’ll be able to watch Devotees walk over a four-metre pit of coal and finish unharmed! Amazing isn’t it? Kids, please do not try this at home.
So, don’t wait any longer to visit this sunny island! Plenty of cultural and mouth-watering experiences await you!
